Description: The romantic main theme (A1) from Steiner's "Tone Poem" is played by the strings, echoed by an A2 countermelody played by brass and piano; although the A2 idea is prominent in the Tone Poem, the A1 theme is the one most frequently developed in the film's soundtrack; the second half of the theme is played by lush strings as the camera zooms in on Peggy sitting in the audience
Music annotations: [m. 10] a tempo; [m. 12] marcato; [m. 18] expressivo / f; [m. 22] listesso; [m. 23] poco a poco cresc e accel; [m. 28] sffz / ff / ritenuto
Orchestration annotations: [m. 10] tutti / saxes? / celli horns / 3 trbs etc?; [m. 12] 1 trb / 2 pianos cel + 3 trpts muted; [m. 16] piano + contrabassoon; [m. 18] harps + pianos; [m. 22] all str W.W. / celli + saxes / (trumpets inserted to bar 29) / 2nd viol + violas / trbs / pianos bassooons / b cl; [m. 26] tutti; [m. 28] 2 pianos 2 harps + saxes etc / timp; [m. 29] piccolo flts, 1 harp
Analysis: The main theme is similar to the primary theme in sonata or rondo form; the harmonic language incorporates extended tertians throughout and features many deceptive resolutions; for instance, the initial IM7 in F major is immediately destabilized by a dominant 13th chord on IV, and in the second phrase, a ii9-V11 progression in Eb resolves deceptively to a bVII13; the third phrase (acting like the bridge in an AABA structure) features circle progressions and moves from G major to E minor; the final phrase climbs upwards (with a7, b7, and C7 sonorities) back towards the initial key of F major
