Description
On-screen: Henriette counts tangerine slices
Description: The music rises dramatically in an ascending sequence as Henriette and Raynald count tangerine slices (1 - 2 - 3 - 4); Henriette misses 6, 7, 8, and 9 since she is distracted by talking to the Duke; the camera zooms in on the Duke and the music swells up to a climax as he realizes that they will be alone together if she stays to take care of Raynald; after the climax the music calms down slowly, leading into Henriette's theme
Music annotations: [m. 57] cresc; [m. 61] rit; [m. 62] p / mf; [m. 64] ppp; [m. 66] listesso; [m. 67] molto rit
Film annotations: [m. 58] Three!; [m. 60] Ten, eleven; [m. 64] There, that didn't hurt; [m. 66] I'm sure I could follow
Orchestration annotations: [m. 59] W.W.; [m. 60] 1st harp added / 2nd harp; [m. 61] harp; [m. 62] celli + bassoons; [m. 64] add celeste / str
Analysis: Rising chromatic sequences as they count, followed by a four-note melodic gesture that rises over an expanding wedge gesture (corresponding with the camera zoom) to a climax on a somewhat tense (01468) sonority as we see the Duke's expression; this resolves to a calm E major triad as Raynald appears to be feeling better
