Description
On-screen: Eddie plays the piano
Description: Eddie plays the beginning of his composition on the piano, which is the part that Danny likes the best; the music is rudely interrupted by the clanging of the bell in a boxing ring
Music annotations: [spotting sheet] Part D / Ed plays third time and dis to Prize Fight
Analysis: This passage is based on the initial A theme of Steiner's "Tone Poem"; the theme begins in F major but is quickly destabilized by a dominant Bb13 chord; the second phrase seems to move towards Eb but is similarly destabilized by a Db13 chord; each statement of the main theme (A1) is answered by a statement of the A2 theme; the third phrase features a ii-V-I in G major (with extensions), followed by a ii-V-i in the relative key of E minor
