Description
On-screen: Georgia hallucinates
Description: Georgia hallucinates hearing a train whistle; this train whistle was supplied in Steiner's score, but the music was cut from the film; it would have started at around 30:49 and ended with the smashed window at 31:05; this cue was recorded and is preserved in the Max Steiner Collection at BYU
Music annotations: [m. 15] poco accell / mp / glissando / p / mf / pp / Murray: look on back of page; [back of page] w. wind for bar 15 etc / flt + piccolo (same register) / 3 clts / 2 oboes (cue them in only) / 4 horns muted / gliss / if you have a better idea, it's o.k. too - the "whistle" imitation is intended as appearing in her mind only - pp and swimmy; [m. 19] etc / 1/2 tone up; [m. 22] crescendo; [m. 23] cresc; [m. 28] etc; [m. 29] sffz / etc
Film annotations: [m. 30] Smashed window
Orchestration annotations: [m. 15] violins divisi and 2 vibras (4 sticks each) / violas divisi / 3 trbs (felts) / add tuba pp; [m. 26] add 2 trpts muted / 4 horns / gong (make it separate); [m. 27] add viola + celli; [m. 29] viola / celli; [m. 30] T.C. (hand) (let it ring) / B.D.
Analysis: Rushing up-and-down chromatic flourishes under a dissonant polychord representing a train whistle (two diminished seventh chords a half-step apart); the train whistle gesture accelerates as the cue progresses; the cue ends with parallel diminished triads
