Description
Description: Turbulent continuation of the "Celebre Romance" theme as men outside cheer the posted news about the war; Steiner writes this cue as a direct continuation of the dotted-rhythm figuration of the third phrase in David's performance
On-screen: News of the war
Music annotations: [m. 1] Agitato / tutti / mf / full- ominous- not loud!! (beginning of the 'riot'!!) verstehst??; [m. 6] moren
Film annotations: [m. 1] Herald window
Orchestration annotations: [m. 1] str / w.w. / horns / trbs / tuba / celli, basses, timp roll; [m. 2] harp gliss; [m. 3] timp roll; [m. 4] gliss; [m. 5] timp
Analysis: Develops the dotted-rhythm motive within a whole-tone collection; this variant was scored to seamlessly follow the on-screen violin, continuing its melody in the sixth measure of the theme; however, in the film the repeat of the theme by the solo violin was cut (spoiling the connection)
