Description
On-screen: Montage of activities in the city
Description: This montage sequence accompanies various activities in the city; it begins with a cymbal splash and a dissonant brass chord; it sounds more march-like as we see a Chinese dragon marching down the street in Chinatown; it becomes more Broadway-like as we see a boxing match and a night club
Analysis: The Chinatown segment uses whole-tone scales while the Broadway segment (the boxing match and the gambling scene) uses diatonic scales with bright harmonies and syncopated rhythms; the coda segment uses a "sputtering" 3 + 3 + 2 rhythmic pattern to depict the motorboat engine; note there are some other things Steiner could have mickey-moused here (such as the roulette wheel) that he did not
