Orchestration annotations: [m. 137] str divisi / saxes? / 2 pianos - celeste 2 harps 2 guitars / basses celli horns; [m. 146] W.W. added; [m. 148] W.W. added; [m. 149] tutti / trpts added (quasi hot) / saxes 1 trb / some W.W. added / trbs etc / 3 pianos 2 harps
Analysis: This tonally stable theme has a clear AABA structure; in a sonata form interpretation of the work's form, the D theme might initiate the recapitulation, substituting for the A theme (which arrives later); the theme features quite a bit of parallel motion (such as the opening I-ii7-iii7-IV7 progression) and uses melodic blue notes; the bridge involves a chromatic sequence using 9th chords; the strings play an active countermelody as the A phrase returns
