Begins as a simple electronic drone, to which is added a layer of ticking, then a layer of half-step oscillation; a steadily-paced horn gesture is added, along with brass accents; the oscillating gesture is doubled in higher registers to increase the intensity, then played in more dissonant intervals as well; the horn and brass lines intensity, becoming a four-note descending ostinato (as in the beginning of the cue with the woodwinds); the oscillating two-note gesture is synchronized with the ticking sound until shortly before the explosion, when it speeds up precipitously (three in the space of two, then four), creating heightened tension and alarm, moving up into the highest string registers |
