Analysis: |
For the first time since the opening credits, the x and y motives are brought together in a gesture similar to the "Dust Be My Destiny" motto, but motive Y is inverted; Mabel longs to be with Joe but is denied, so her previously hopeful motive (Y) is inverted; above the point of resolution there is a prolonged sigh with a dissonant b6-5; the register is lower than usual, adding to the somber mood overall |
