Description
Description: As Joe tries to leave with a gun and Mabel tries to stop him, we hear an agitated variation of the main theme, which grows directly out of the radio version; lush strings as Mabel commits to stick with Joe, then it quickly becomes dark when Mabel says that she will leave Joe if he steals, saying "If you do this you don't ever have to come back"
On-screen: Mabel confronts Joe

Analysis: This cue begins with a statement of the motto which fails to resolve, followed by a rising melodic sequence harmonized by dominant #9 chords; the theme returns in what seems to be D major, but soon becomes harmonically unstable, ending with repeated echoes of motive Y over rising parallel (026) triads; each repetition of motive Y uses slightly different intervallic leaps; measures 35-36 of Steiner's score were cut from the film (you can hear the break in the soundtrack)
