Description: Glockenspiel, vibraphone, celeste, harp and high string tremolos represent Johnnie's moment of inspiration (after appealing to the Father in the painting) - he decides to not use his south paw in the fight so that he won't be noticed; this is followed by another dramatic crescendo as his hope rebuilds
On-screen: Johnnie has an inspiration
Music annotations: [m. 43] morendo / pp / tremolo; [m. 44] faster; [m. 45] sempre ppp / pp / Hugo! anything at all that sounds (way off - and very mysterious) (shadow boxing and dialogue whispered); [m. 46] div; [m. 47] accel e cresc / more + more orchestra; [m. 49] tr / almost tutti; [m. 50] brass band in Bb [with a chord of the brass band transcribed] / Hugo! This should build and build and build - to a terrific "diminuendo" as Boris Morros says. (No kidding - it really should build!!!)
Film annotations: [m. 44] Suppose that Dick; [m. 50] Into arena
Orchestration annotations: [m. 43] glockenspiel / vibraphone sustain / pp harp; [m. 45] harp + celeste? fl?; [m. 47] harp / vibra; [m. 50] horns etc / trbs etc / timp
Analysis: After a dominant pedal in A major, a pump-up modulation takes us to a dominant pedal in Bb major, setting up the entrance of the brass band source music (in Bb)
