Description
On-screen: Danny working at his newsstand
Description: Over a soft, shimmering cluster, a solo flute enters with the main theme (which doubles as Danny and Peggy's love theme) as Danny sees Peggy approaching while working at his news stand; at first he doesn't recognize her (just a blur); as her face comes into focus, the music swells romantically; this is followed by several statements of the Tone Poem A2 theme in melodic sequence
Music annotations: [m. 1] modto / pp; [m. 4] tremolo; [m. 5] poco cresc; [m. 8] tremolo; [m. 9] no tremolo; [m. 10] sf; [m. 11] rall; [m. 12] rall; [m. 17] arpeggio / Help! (make it beoootiful!); [m. 18] rall / arp; [m. 19] dolce / very "stringy"; [m. 20] enharm / rit
Film annotations: [m. 4] Danny looks; [m. 6] What do you read?; [m. 9] All clear; [m. 12] Hello, Peg!!; [m. 13] Hello, Danny!; [m. 17] I just finished
Orchestration annotations: [m. 1] str + vibraph; [m. 3] fl (cue in oboe) soli; [m. 10] celeste harp piano, 2 fl; [m. 13] solo violin; [m. 15] add 1 violas; [m. 17] all violin + celli etc; [m. 19] harp / 2nd; [m. 20] add vibraphone etc
Analysis: The first tone cluster is diatonic (01357), followed by a WT cluster (02468); the music then moves towards Ab major with slow repetitions of A2; the cue ends by suggesting a move to D major (which does not occur)
