Description
Description: Fast, frolicky piece in 6/8 with bright, upbeat orchestration; dancelike, with an arpeggiated "wagon wheel" accompaniment; this joyful sounding cue turns into a chromatic falling gesture when one of the ladies at a picnic gossips about Leni's attempted suicide; the last four bars are cut from film but are included in the transcription
On-screen: Leni and Gerald run through the park
Music annotations: [m. 1] Tempo track / Scherzando; [m. 4] Hugo! Any little runs to make it more scherzando will be deeply appreciated!; [m. 5] legato; [m. 8] "Happy child hood days!"; [m. 13] legato / cresc; [m. 16] loco / legato; [m. 19] dim; [m. 21] p; [m. 23] p; [m. 30] moren / pp, pp; [m. 31] ppp
Film annotations: [m. 1] Leni and Gerald skipping along; [m. 17] Leni and boy out of sight; [m. 20] Inuendo; [m. 21] 2 gossips (dialogue); [m. 31] End of reel
Orchestration annotations: [m. 1] cel, bells / horn / harp (finger it); [m. 5] divisi; [m. 7] cel; [m. 8] oboe? / fl + celesta; Harps, celeste, Vibra, Strings, a little WW; [m. 13] divisi / horns / harps; [m. 14] w.w.; [m. 16] w.w.; [m. 19] cel, w.w.; [m. 23] w.w. / celli; [m. 28] add vibraph; [m. 31] harp, celest
Analysis: The cue begins with music over a stable tonic pedal in Bb, which shifts to music over a dominant pedal in D major; a passage of descending parallel diminished 7ths begins precisely as the women start gossiping about Leni
