Description: The music cuts back suddenly as Leslie finally speaks, rising and turning her back to Howard; low strings play a tense variant of Leslie's theme, now played even more quickly than before, building and climbing quickly to a new climax as her emotions build up once again
On-screen: Leslie reacts angrily to the letter
Music annotations: [m. 25] tempo / Vito! copy from parts / mf / 1/2 tone higher; [m. 33] molto crescendo / out this time / gliss
Film annotations: [m. 25] Then it must be a forgery!; [m. 27] It's not dated; [m. 29] Leslie, the prosecutor; [m. 33] Howard I swear to you
Orchestration annotations: [m. 26] viol
Analysis: Dissonant polychords in the accompaniment; harmonic rhythm speeds up as the climax approaches with parallel ascending augmented triads (plus a dissonant major seventh, creating an [0148] sonority)
